If you don't consider yourself a trendsetter when it comes to hats, you're not alone. Many people forget or simply avoid this popular fashion accessory, either because they don't think they look good in hats at all or they just don't know when or how to wear one. Hats can be a great way to top off a look or express yourself and have the added benefit of shading your scalp (and face, in the event of a baseball-style cap) from the sun. Here are tips to wearing hats for the beginner.
Wear the right size
Hats should fit snug above your ears and over your forehead, but not be so tight that they leave a mark. Adjustable hats, such as strapback hats, can be fitted specifically to your head. When trying hats on, shake your head from side to side and slightly tilt your head down to see how your headwear sits. It should not move as you do.
If you have a small forehead, wear hats that are slightly oversized, such as sun hats or wide-brimmed caps. If you have a longer forehead, wear hats that are more snug to balance out your face.
Go vintage
If you don't know how to wear a hat, let it wear you by going vintage in style. Frayed ball caps, classic berets, cream-colored sun hats, or even pillbox hats all make their own statement. You will look confident and like you wear the accessory with style when you go with a classic, vintage-inspired design that not everyone else is wearing. You can find vintage hats in a local antique store, such as ByKiy, for a great price in many cases.
Watch your other accessories
With hats, sometimes less is more. You don't want to pair a hat with earrings, necklaces, sunglasses, or other accessories. The exception is sunglasses: when you are outdoors and in the sun, there is no more appropriate pair than a great pair of sunglasses and your favorite brimmed hat.
If you do want to wear accessories along with your hat, stick to thin chained necklaces or go all out with bracelets and rings. These accessories are less likely to effect the fashionable style of your hat since they are not close to your face.
You can wear hats even if you have never really worn one before. Visit your local clothing store and try on many styles before you buy one you like. You just may find yourself falling in love with this time-honored fashion piece.
